If you want to have a good website for business purposes or for personal purposes then you need website hosting to get online, and to be able to run your website properly then you should be able to get the good hosting that you can run a website perfectly.

Flooded by many web hosting packages offered on the web, it may be quite difficult to chose a web hosting service that suits your needs. You should consider the following things before you make a decision when choosing a web host:

  • Consider first whether you want to use the website for free hosting or paid hosting? You can use free hosting if you want to make personal website, personal blog or a social site. Sites like Wetpaint, Squidoo, Wordpress and Blogspot are good consideration. Do a Google Search and you can easily find hundreds of providers offering free website. Just note that you may have to content with banner advertisements if you choose free site hosting. Another important thing to note is “free” hosting may not be totally perpetual – sites like Geocities were shut down despite being reputable. Consider a paid hosting if you want to create a business website. Not only it will look more professional, it will allow you full management over the website. Paid web hosting is recommended for those who are serious in putting up a unique web presence.
  • For starter, a shared web hosting is recommended for its simplicity. Shared hosting means that your website is hosted with other users’ websites using a common IP address. The advantage is that most shared hosting plans are relatively cheap nowadays. If you do want to go for shared hosting, I’d recommend you check out Fat Cow web hosting as they are powered by 100% wind energy (do our bit for the environment) and they are quite affordable at $3.67 per month for unlimited hosting. You can read about the disadvantages of shared hosting in my previous post on the problems of shared hosting.
  • Go for virtual private server hosting or dedicated server hosting if your business does require it. These hosting packages offer complete control of your website but do make sure you are capable of administering them. If your are interested in finding out cheap dedicated hosting package, checkout ServerPronto at $32.95 per month.

Unlimited Web Hosting – What You Must Know

November 21st, 2009 sysadmin No comments

Current offers from web hosting services today abound with the statements that unlimited disk space or unlimited bandwidth are on offer. Sometimes it feels like hosts are obliged to offer this as part of their hosting plan. To put a common misconception to bed though; there is no such thing as unlimited in terms of web hosting.

Before you commit to such a plan, read the fine prints or the terms of service. Read the exerpts extracted from a web hosting company that offers unlimited bandwidth or unmetered hosting:

User may not:

Use 25% or more of system resources for longer than 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.

Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.

Run any type of web spider or indexer (including Google Cash / AdSpy) on shared servers.

Run any software that interfaces with an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network.

Run any bit torrent application, tracker, or client. You may link to legal torrents off-site, but may not host or store them on our shared servers.

Participate in any file-sharing/peer-to-peer activities

Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1942, etc

Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes

All this is in reality is a marketing strategy by the wb hosting services, especially so if there are other hosting providers offering similar packages.  The web hosts don’t have to pay anything for doing this either. Those customers that do find themselves reaching the limits of their resources face the very real risk of being suspended or even having their accounts terminated.  First of all, pay special attention to the terms and conditions of the web hosting service. If the terms and conditions appear in any way bad, then you would be well advised to avoid that web hosting service. If you are tempted to sign up because of the marketing ploy, then remember others have as well. The upshot of this could be overloaded servers. Three, try and search out web hosting services that do not offer any unlimited resources. At the end of the day, you can ask them beforehand if there hosting plans are upgradeable.

The basic thing is to understand what kind of content you want to host. Sometimes, a “limited” hosting package does has its advantages, as the hosting provider is more likely to adhere to it… until you breach it.
